Kidney stones are one of the most common urological ailment in India especially affecting young and middle age people with most patients being 20-40 year old.

One of the most common question that my patients ask me is “ Doctor why did I develop kidney stone and how can I prevent a recurrence ?”. Though the exact cause is not evident in most patients but it usually is an end result of stone forming substances being more than stone inhibiting factors.

Now in our hectic daily schedule we often find it hard to control or choose our diet, so to overcome this I give my patients the simplest but the most effective advise “Stay hydrated”.

In this summer always carry your water bottle and strictly prevent long spells without water.
3 to 3.5 litres of water in 24 hrs is the usual advise but it varies from person to person and also remember that drinking one litre of water soon after getting up and then forgetting to drink frequently during the day is futile. The golden pointer here is that you should drink such an amount that the colour of urine seems pale like water and not yellowish.

You don’t actually need to eat many more calories in pregnancy, and many women use less calories for exercise. So you may find that you don’t need to eat more during during the early and middle part of pregnancy to keep both you and thebaby healthy.

Other than plain water, citric fruits like oranges, pineapples, lemon and their juices as well as fresh coconut water are also very good for hydration as they pack many natural inhibitors of urinary stones.

So cool off this summer with loads of water, juices and water rich fruits and beat the kidney stones
